Three Reasons Why We Don’t Use Artificial Food Preservatives
Urban Kitchen’s soups are packed full of nutritious ingredients that our chefs have combined into some of the tastiest microwaveable soups that you’ll find on the market.
But there’s one thing that our soups don’t contain – artificial preservatives.
We take pride in using natural ingredients and ensuring that none of our soups undergo any unnecessary fiddling to make them last longer.
But you may find yourself wondering what’s so bad about artificial preservatives in the first place. After all, they help your foods to last longer, right?
Here are the reasons why we don’t use them.
Reason #1 – Cutting Down on Bad Reactions
Artificial preservatives use chemicals that your body doesn’t naturally consume. The simple fact is that some of these chemicals, which can include sodium benzoate and sulphite, have the potential to trigger allergic reactions in people. Worst of all, you may not even know that you have an allergy until you eat a food that uses one of these preservatives.
Sulphites, in particular, can be very dangerous. In the best case scenario, they cause rashes and abdominal issues in people who experience reactions. But at their worst, they can cause anaphylactic shock and severe breathing difficulties.
We will stress that this only happens to people who have adverse allergic reactions to the preservatives. But we want the Urban Kitchen soup range to be as inclusive as possible, which means that
Reason #2 – They Have Links to Mental Health Issues
Another major reason for our decision to not use artificial preservatives and additives is that recent scientific studies have shown that they have a potential link to a range of mental health issues. Most prominent amongst these is ADHD in children.
There are several studies that you can find to show this link. The one that caught our eye was a six-week study that highlighted that children who consume such additives are more likely to be hyperactive.
This isn’t to suggest that food additives and preservatives are the sole cause of such mental health issues. But they certainly seem to be a contributor, which is why we think it’s a healthier option to avoid using them altogether.
Reason #3 – Possible Cancer Links
In addition to the possible mental issues that unnatural preservatives can cause, there have been several studies that suggest that these chemicals have links to cancer.
Many of these studies don’t draw a definitive link. But there definitely seems to be enough evidence to suggest that some artificial preservatives, such as BHA and BHT, have a negative effect on the human body.
It seems that some people metabolize these chemicals differently to others. If you fall into that group, such chemicals may increase the possibility that you’ll suffer from cancer at some point in your life.
We want to avoid any possibility of our soups causing this issue, which means we ditch the preservatives.
