We take great pride in the fact that we all of the Urban Kitchen range contain very little sugar. There’s an epidemic of sugar-related health conditions spreading, so anything that can lower your blood sugar levels is a good thing.

That’s likely why there’s been such a keen uptake of the ketogenic (keto) diet in recent years. This diet calls upon you to drastically cut your carb count. Instead, you eat a lot more fatty foods. The strange thing is that this actually helps you to lose weight. And, you can include Urban Kitchen foods as part of your meal plan.

How Does it Work?

When you eat carbohydrates, your body converts them into glucose. This glucose then enters your bloodstream, where it’s used by your cells to power your body.

That’s all well and good. But a problem arises when you eat more carbs than you need to power your body.

Too much sugar enters your bloodstream, which means that your body has to produce more insulin. Over time, this can lead to you developing an insulin resistance, which is a pathway towards diabetes.

The keto diet changes the way that your body works. You cut your daily carb count down to about 30g per day and replace many of the foods that you eat with foods that contain healthy fats. This means no processed foods. Instead, you eat a lot of fresh meats, fish, and vegetables.

When your body burns fat, it creates something called ketones. Your cells can use these an alternative source of fuel when it doesn’t have any sugar to work with. Ketones also don’t require the use of insulin.

The idea behind the keto diet is to change your body’s main source of fuel from sugar to ketones. This is called the ketosis state. This means that you burn fat quicker and have less chance of developing diabetes. In fact, many diabetic people adopt the diet as a means of helping them to control their condition.

Where Do Our Soups Fit In?

The keto diet doesn’t come without its problems. You have to cut a lot of nutritional foods from your diet to keep your carb count low. This means you stop eating many fruits, in addition to carb-heavy foods that contain fibre.

You need to find substitutes for those foods in order to follow the diet properly.

That’s where our soups can help. In between all of the meats and fatty foods that you eat, our soups offer a source of nutritious vegetables that can help your body get the vitamins and nutrients that it needs to operate properly. Best of all, you can use them as snacks between your main keto meals.

The fibre content of our soups makes them particularly useful for those on the diet. You get less sugar and high fibre. How can you go wrong?

The ketogenic diet certainly isn’t for everyone. And it’s recommended that you speak to a medical professional and understand the risks before adopting it. Assuming everything’s okay, you can feel safe in eating our soups without risking coming out of ketosis.
